Congratulations, you’re in!Welcome new Aggie!

Congratulations on your admission to UC Davis, and for picking one of the most exciting, hands-on majors this university offers. The major in Marine and Coastal Science in the College of Biological Sciences will give you an interdisciplinary look at the current issues in Marine Sciences today, and will prepare you for a rewarding and stimulating career in a variety of scientific fields.

The coursework required for a Bachelor's of Science in Marine and Coastal Science is flexible, and so it can be personalized to your specific interests within the Marine Sciences or designed to give you breadth in many areas. The collaborative nature of Marine Science research on the UC Davis campus means that students take classes from and conduct research with faculty in over eighteen departments across campus, spanning all four colleges. The major requires students to complete research or an internship and do fieldwork before graduating. Most students choose to complete these requirements at Bodega Marine Laboratory, a world-class facility located on the Northern California Coast. Here students can take courses, conduct independent research experiments including a written paper and presentation, and work directly with marine organisms and systems. Students will graduate with research or internship experience and fieldwork experience that's more unique and in-depth than most opportunities offered on campus, making them competitive for graduate school admissions or careers in the marine sciences.

I would like to invite you to Decision UC Davis on Saturday, April 7th, 2018 on the UC Davis campus. At Decision UC Davis you will get a chance to meet faculty, talk to current students, and get your questions answered by staff. The major will be represented at the Resource Fair from 10am-12pm on Hutchinson Field, so please stop by and visit us there to learn about the program and resources available to help you excel in this major. We also encourage you to attend the Marine and Coastal Science Open House from 1-2pm in the Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute in Storer Hall, room 1347. Here you can mingle with faculty, students, staff, and fellow admitted students in a space devoted to the study of Marine Sciences at UC Davis. Light refreshments will be provided.

Please visit our website for more information about the major and the department. I also encourage you to attend Orientation this summer, where you will learn more about the requirements to complete this major and sign up for your first quarter of classes.

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences is thrilled to welcome you to UC Davis. Please feel free to email, call, or visit me if you have any questions about the Marine and Coastal Science major or about UC Davis in general. Congratulations again on your admission, and welcome to UC Davis!
